Robinson Ortiz

Robinson Ortiz is the Dodgers #29 prospect as 21-year-old left-handed pitcher for Great Lake Loons, Dodgers Single-A Affiliate.  He stands 6’0 180 pounds out of the Dominican Republic.  The Dodgers signed Robinson Ortiz as an International Free Agent in 2017.

He has only thrown 11.2 innings and has a 0.77 Earned Run Average.  Unfortunately, he has 13 walks and has 12 strikeouts.  You’d like your pitcher to have more strikeouts than walks.

He has a Fastball Slider Changeup mix of pitches in his arsenal.  Fastball is consistently thrown at 92-95 MPH.  It can be a plus pitch if he can throw it a couple of miles per hour faster.  He doesn’t have great control of any of his pitches but the movement is very much there.  He throws a hard slider at around 85-87 MPH.  The difference between the slider and fastball should be higher.  You would like the speed difference to be around 10 MPH.  The slider has crazy movement and is thrown in the same arm slot as the fastball so it is hard to tell the difference between the two pitches.  The changeup is just like the other pitches.  He has great movement in all his pitches but doesn’t have great control so it limits his ability to move up.  Once he gets control of his command issues, he can be a really good player and should shoot up the farm system.

Robinson Ortiz is projected to come up in 2022 and if he can get his control dialed in, he can make it.  I see him being a Victor Gonzalez-type player for the Dodgers as in he will come out of nowhere and be a good bullpen piece for us.  If he can throw enough strikes, we got ourselves a sneaky good bullpen piece.
