The Los Angeles Dodgers have always had a very respectable farm system with some of the best player development coaches in the world. I want to get more in-depth on this farm system so people can learn about these prospects instead of just seeing their statistics. Starting with number 30 on the Dodgers’ top 30 prospects is Nick Robertson.
Nick Robertson is a 22-year-old that stands 6’5 and weighs 265 pounds. He was drafted in 2019 as the 221st overall player (7th Round) out of James Madison as a Right-Handed Pitcher.
He is starting this season throwing well. He has a 1.31 Earned Run Average with the Tulsa Drillers (AA). He does a really good job coming into a game with runners on and getting out of the inning with no runs being scored.
Nick Robertson has a pitching mix of a Fastball, Slider and a Changeup. Fastball is consistently thrown at 94-96 MPH and can touch 98. On the 20-80 scouting scale, his fastball is ranked at 65 which is above average and has plenty of room to grow with his size and age. His slider sits around mid-80’s and if he develops this pitch well, he will be in the big leagues very soon. The pitch has some great movement but he does not have great control of it. His changeup sits in the low 80’s and is nothing to write home about. When he pitched in college, he didn’t pitch very downhill. As a 6’5 athlete, if he throws more downhill, he can add a couple more miles per hour to his pitches making him that much more dangerous.
Nick’s ETA (Estimated Time for Arrival) to the pros is 2021 but I don’t see it. If he is gonna pitch in MLB in 2021, it will be on a different team because I don’t see him being a part of this teams’ bullpen unless injuries push him up. He would be an intriguing trade piece for a rebuilding team looking for a future arm.
