Number 29 on the Dodgers’ top 30 prospects is a 23-year-old by the name of Omar Estevez. He is a second baseman that can also play shortstop. He stands at 5’10 185 pounds so he is not the biggest guy on the baseball diamond. He is currently playing with the Dodgers AAA affiliate, Oklahoma City Dodgers. The Dodgers signed Omar Estevez as part of their huge 2015-2016 International Amateur Class in which they spent $96 Million.
Omar is struggling mightily this year hitting .185 with 2 homeruns and 14 runs batted in. In 2019, he played with the Tulsa Drillers, Dodgers AA affiliate, hitting .291 with 6 homeruns and 36 RBI’s. That means one of two things: he is struggling versus the AAA talent or the year off in 2020 damaged his development and he is just trying to get back on track. He has a great vision of the strike zone but he loves to chase. He has a 9% walk rate, which is above average, and a 27% K rate, which is awful. There is not a ton you can love about Omar Estevez besides his ability to just normally flat-out hit. If he continues to hit like he is doing right now, he has no future with the Dodgers.
Omar Estevez’s ETA to the pros is in 2021, which will not happen. The Dodgers value versatility in their prospects, but Estevez can only play shortstop if it’s an emergency as his fielding skills aren’t there. Omar Estevez’s trade value is virtually non-existent because of his current poor play. The Dodgers made some unfortunate trades with the talent in the 2015-2016 international amateur class, trading Yordan Alvarez, who is a star for the Houston Astros (Booo!), and Oneil Cruz, who is a top shortstop prospect for the Pittsburgh Pirates, in 2 different trades. I kind of wish they would have traded Omar Estevez instead of Alvarez or Cruz but hey hindsight is 20/20. Omar Estevez doesn’t have a bright future with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but maybe a change of scenery is what he needs to take the next step.
