Brandon Lewis

The Dodgers #25 prospect is Brandon Lewis, a 6’2 222-pound 3rd baseman.  The 22-year old was drafted in the 4th round of the 2019 MLB Draft.  At the start of the year, he was playing for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.  With the Quakes, he hit a .278 average with 10 HRs and 35 RBIs in 169 ABs.  Lewis ended up playing his first game with the the Dodgers High-A affiliate, Great Lake Loons on June 28th, 2021.  Since then, he has hit a .248 average with 12 HRs and 33 RBIs in 133 ABs.

Brandon Lewis has a swing and miss issue..  In Rancho Cucamonga and Great Lakes, he has a strikeout percentage of 37% and 31%, respectively.  This swing and miss percentage can be attributed to his excessively aggressive approach at the plate.  On the flip side, Brandon has incredible power as he already has 22 homeruns this year collectively. At times, Lewis’ swing gets too long and he relies to heavily on his pull power. It will be interesting to see how he performs against more advanced pitchers as he gets promoted through the Dodger system.

Lewis is not too athletic and has some difficulty moving laterally at third base.  He is better suited to playing first base because the need for good lateral movement is less.  I think the Dodgers are holding out that his lateral movement will improve because he has a phenomenal arm and makes throws from third look easy.

Lewis is expected to be called up to the major leagues by 2022.  Because he still playing in High A, despite doing well, I think it is unlikely he will make it to the majors by 2022.  Brandon needs time to mature and get an opportunity to face more quality pitching before being seasoned enough for the majors.    Maybe Brandon can be a September call-up next year to get his feet wet.
